Final Reflection
Brandon Hewett
What have I learned this semester? How have I developed as a writer, learner and a collaborator? I've learned various new techniques to enhance my writing capabilities, how to edit paragraphs precisely and how to argue a position in an essay. I feel as if my writing capabilities have grown greatly this semester and that ability to write essays and reflections have become more thorough and enjoyable. With all of the hard work I have done this semester, I can only look back at what I've learned and accomplished and what will help me in the long run.
I remember at the start of the semester when we had to learn to edit paragraphs the correct way using sentence fragments, comma splices, and subject-verb agreements. I have to admit that these quizzes gave me trouble, but after studying them more I began to understand them more. This led to helping me with writing essays later in the semester and helped prevent common errors in my assignments. My memory about citing and MLA format had faded before this course, and after we took a look at how to correctly cite various sources, I had no trouble in giving credit to the information I used in essays. Learning how to avoid plagiarism was very useful because it helped prevent something that can be done without even noticing and I would very much like to always give credit where it is do.
After we were assigned our first essay I was worried that my writing skills would be a little rusty and that I would not do well. My topic was censorship and I’m glad that I chose it because it was something that I was very interested in and I learned a lot from it. I used what I learned from studying to create an essay that I feel was one of the best ones that I have done. This also helped my skills in collaborating with others when we did the peer editing in separate groups. This essay also brought out some of my writing skills that I was not aware of and I believe that is why I did well on it.
The essay where we had to argue a position was really interesting to do. I have taken a side on a subject and then wrote about in all my years. I chose to take the side that’s against censorship and I believe that stated a strong argument that would open any reader’s eyes up to the subject. I feel like this essay helped me open my eyes to who I am and how I stand on certain subjects and I cannot complain about that at all. I feel like this essay really helped me in making my writing skills stronger and taking a different approach in the way I think.
This past semester I feel like I have grown stronger as a writer and my skills have been greatly increased. I have learned the proper way to write essays and edit other works as well, and I feel as if they will help me in the long run with my career and future education. I have learned that I can accomplish anything that I set my sights on with hard work, dedication, and motivation to strive in the things I do. I hope that I continue to create works of writing that test my skills and thoughts because they get me motivated to think about greater things that I may work towards in the future. This class has reimbursed my love for writing and has brought life back to skills as a reader, writer, and a student. I hope that I continue to learn more ways to increase my skills in the future and helps me to become an even greater writer.
